The Economics of Agriculture and our Natural Resources With Texas farm and ranch revenues at $15 billion dollars, agriculture is BIG Business. Our agricultural producers face challenges that require up-to-date management information. Through our nationally renowned research facilities, such as the Citrus Center, TAMUK students are exposed to research and it's significance to the industry at an early stage in their careers. Our students learn how to address today's challenges and become the problem solvers for current and future management decisions.
Besides agricultural economics, students are educated in the areas of natural resource and environmental economics, to become advocates for farm, ranch and water management issues. Economic policy, finance, and economics applied at the international scale are all part of this cohesive program. The knowledge and skills acquired in this program are applicable to almost any field and therefore, our graduates have excellent employment opportunities after graduation. Promoting Agriculture Science through Education Farming and ranching are the heart of South Texas. The agriculture science program is the vehicle for training the future managers and extension agents of these precious resources. If you are looking to promote education and enjoy serving others, then the ‘High School Ag Science Teacher Certification’ degree program may be just what you’re looking for. We invite you to be a part of a strong history of students who have continued their interests found through FFA and agricultural involvement. Graduates from these programs not only enjoy what they do, but are getting paid to do it.
In addition, the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management is the first program in the nation to provide a degree dealing with ranch management at the Master's level. Undergraduates benefit from this program through the many guest speakers, symposia, and lectureships that are presented through the Institute. Keeping the Earth Green and Dirty The Plant and Soil Science program centered upon our environment, how we interact with it, and how our agricultural practices influence its future. Students can major in the areas of Environmental Soil Science, Agronomy or Horticulture. Conservation of land, soil and water resources is of utmost concern, and students are engaged in studies and research centered upon finding solutions to present concerns. Students learn the importance of farmland preservation, improving crop production, increasing crop nutrition for human health, and enhancing crops through genetic engineering. Graduates find employment in diverse areas from federal and state government agencies, farm managers, greenhouse industry, research and engineering firms, chemical and biotechnology companies.
